Miso tofu slices

For anyone who complains that tofu has no flavor, this recipe is a great way to infuse tofu with the Japanese flavors of miso, soy sauce and ginger. It’s quick and easy, you just mix up a paste, brush it on the tofu and broil for a few minutes.

Miso-baked Tofu
1 container extra firm tofu
1/3 cup miso
3 Tbsp. rice vinegar
3 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. milk
1 tsp. fresh ginger, minced
1 clove garlic, minced
3 Tbsp. water
1 Tbsp. soy sauce
2 Tbsp. sesame oil

Preheat broiler. Place tin foil in the bottom of a cookie sheet or shallow baking pan.  Combine all ingredients except tofu and whisk well (or use a blender/food processor).

Drain and press tofu between layers or paper towel or a clean dish towel to remove extra liquid.  Cut tofu into ½-inch slices.  Place tofu slices on the covered baking pan.  Brush the top side generously with miso paste, then flip and brush the other side.

Broil until nicely browned, then flip and re-baste with the miso paste.  Broil the other side again until browned and getting crispy.  Remove from oven and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Serve on top of lightly dressed salad greens and/or with rice.

  1. by the way, I used red miso for this recipe, but probably either would suffice.
